Chapter Five

When Serena had awoken that next morning, she’d discovered a note on the counter. It read, ‘Had to leave for business. Will see you next time. Thank you for everything.’ She hadn’t heard from him since, which was his usual protocol, but she thought that maybe he might miss her and make an effort to reach out to her. That did not happen.

She spent lonely hours and days at the penthouse or walking around the city. It was two days after her period should have come that she thought she’d better have the doctor run a pregnancy test. He came to the penthouse and examined her, and told her he’d call her with the results. Serena waited by the phone, ignoring it and focusing on anything else she could get her hands on, but keeping one eye on it constantly. Later that afternoon it rang, and the doctor was on the other line.

“Good afternoon Serena, how are you doing?” he asked pleasantly.

“I don’t know… Doctor, how am I doing? She asked, anxious to know what her results were.

“I’d say you were doing very well. Your test is positive. You’re pregnant!” he sounded joyous over the phone. “Just barely, you’re less than a month along. Would you like me to tell Robert or would you like to tell him?”

She was quiet for a moment and then answered, “I’ll tell him, thank you doctor.”

“Wonderful! I’ll see you next month, and every month after that as we go along through your pregnancy together. Take good care of yourself and stick to that dietician’s menu, get lots of rest and exercise, and drink lots of water. I think you already have prenatal vitamins there at the penthouse and those should get you through until I see you again. Congratulations Serena.”

“Thank you.” She said and hung up.

Emotion cascaded over her and through her, hitting her with such force that she sank to the floor and sobbed. She was relieved that she was pregnant, but more than anything else she realized that this meant that Rob would not be making love to her nor having intercourse with her again. Ever again. The realization ripped through her and she gushed sorrow from the wound. She cried so hard that she cried herself to sleep and woke up on the kitchen floor hours later with a pounding headache. She sat up and rubbed her head.

She was pregnant. There was a baby growing inside of her. She looked down at her belly but it didn’t look any different to her. She rubbed her hand over it. “I’ll take good care of you while you’re in there.” She said softly. Serena pulled herself up off the floor and walked into the Zen garden with the phone in her hand. She sat on the bench there and looked down at the koi fish swimming around in the water. They had such a simple, uncomplicated life. She looked at the phone in her hand and took a deep breath before dialing Rob’s number.
